Biographical Notes

Harold Oldridge Round was born on 25 June 1887 at Christchurch, the eldest son of Elisha and Isabella (née Wright) Round. Elisha and Isabella married in 1884 and had two daughters and four sons. For the most part, Harold was educated at Woolston School, Christchurch, with a stint at Kaikoura and another at Ferry Road, and a couple of stints at Le Bons Bay School in the custody of Thomas Oldridge. He left school at the age of fourteen to go out to work. While he was at home in Christchurch in 1908, he was in Timaru by 1911, a stereotyper. He had spent some time in Timaru, becoming a member of the 2nd South Canterbury Regimental Band.

Harold Round was a stereotyper for the Christchurch Press Company when he enlisted on 13 January 1916 at Trentham. Single and of Church of England allegiance, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs I. Round, 39 Clarendon Terrace, Woolston, Christchurch. He had, in fact, served for four years with the 2nd South Canterbury Regimental Band. Private H. Round embarked with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion of the 12th Reinforcements, departing for Suez, Egypt on 1 May 1916 per the “Ulimaroa”.

Harold returned to New Zealand per the “Kia Ora, embarking on 27 March 1919 and arriving on 7 May 1919. He was discharged on 6 June 1919, on the termination of his period of engagement, and was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He resumed his profession of stereotyper, remaining in Christchurch until the late 1920s when he moved to New Plymouth. There, in 1930 he married Dulcie Winifred Scrivener (née Fieldes), a widow with one son. Harold and Dulcie had a daughter born in 1931. Harold and family later returned to Christchurch. Harold Round died at Christchurch on 11 September 1971, aged 84 years, and was cremated at the Canterbury Crematorium. Predeceased by Dulcie, he was survived by his daughter, Shona Mills, who was his next-of-kin, and his stepson, Brian Scrivener. Harold’s brother Charles Stanley Round also served in World War One.

At the Second (South Canterbury) Regimental Band’s annual meeting in May 1917, H. Round was included in a list read out giving the names of six ex-members who had joined the forces from other towns. In February 1933, history of the Timaru Municipal Band was recalled. A Roll of Honour list of members of the band who served in the War included H. Round.
