Biographical Notes
John Reid Moore was born 4th February 1873 in Winchester to James and Helen Moore. Before the war he was a wool classer in Winchester and Christchurch. He moved to Australia and married Laura Martin in 1908. Howver she died in 1915.
John, aged 42, enlisted on 22 May 1916 with the Australian Imperial Force at Sydney, with the 56th Battalion. With his unit he embarked on the ship “Ceramic” from Sydney to Plymouth on 7 October 1916. After arriving in the United Kingdom he was then transferred to France via Folkestone on 21 December 1916. John, like many in service, fell ill and was hospitalised in France from 12 to 15 September 1917. Three months later he had a period of leave in the United Kingdom from 31 January 1918 until 20 February 1918, after which he was detached for service with the 184th Tunneling Company, RE.
Later, in August 1918 John was hospitalised with a carbuncle on his left hand and transferred to Shorncliffe Hospital in England. After recovering he was taken on strength with the Headquarters administration. With the war coming to an end, he joined the large number of men to be returned home. Eventually in May 1919 he returned to Australia on the ship “Shropshire” and was later discharged on 3 August 1919.
After the war John remarriwed, this time to Nellie Stewart in Australia in 1927.
John died in Sydney on 8 December 1943
