Biographical Notes
Bertie Edward Waters was born on 14 August 1888 at Geraldine, the sixth surviving son of William and Frances Sophia (née Giles) Waters. Although his birth, death and burial are all registered as Bertie Edward Waters, he enlisted as Herbert Edward Waters, doing so on 15 December 1915 at Trentham. He had served for three years with the Geraldine Rifles until he left the district. He was a carpenter, single and Presbyterian. Residing in Ponsonby, Auckland, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs W. Waters, Geraldine, South Canterbury. Private H. E. Waters embarked with the Auckland Infantry Battalion of the 11th Reinforcements, departing from Auckland for Suez, Egypt, on 1 April 1916.
A complement of invalided soldiers returned to New Zealand by the hospital ship “Maheno”, which was expected to arrive at Wellington on 14 December 1916. The list of those on board included 12/4552 Private Herbert Edward Waters (Auckland Infantry Battalion), carpenter, Geraldine. He was discharged on 15 March 1917, being no longer physically fit for War Service on account of injury sustained on Active Service.
Bertie Edward Waters died on 19 May 1983 at Auckland (of Ranfurly Home), aged 94 years. He was cremated at Purewa, his ashes interred in the Soldiers’ Section of Waikumete Cemetery on 9 September 1983. An older brother George William Waters was killed in action in 1918 in France. Two younger brothers, James Waters and Leonard Albert Waters, also served in World War I.
