Biographical Notes
Hugh Frabcis Mora was the first-born of Francois Michael and Margaret Calista (or Margaret Philomena, née Kavanagh) Mora. He was born on 8 November 1898 at Akaroa, his birth registered as Hugh Francois Mora. He was educated at several schools in Canterbury – German Bay, Sacred Heart Timaru, Marist Brothers Timaru, St Mary’s Christchurch, Richmond Christchurch, Marist Brothers Christchurch. Hugh F. Mora, Fairview, was one of the South Canterbury recruits for the eleventh reinforcements (Mounted Rifles), who left Timaru for Trentham on 15 December 1915. He enlisted, as Francis Hugh Mora, in January 1916 at Tauherenikau, giving himself 4½ years to enable him to do so. His address was C/- Kavanagh, Fairview, Timaru. A farm labourer, single, and Roman Catholic, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs Margaret C. Mora, care of Mrs Belcher, Nursery Road, Papanui, Christchurch.
Private F. H. Mora embarked with the 1sty New Zealand Cyclist Company, departing from Wellington for Suez, Egypt, by the “Mokoia” on 6 May 1916. F. H. Mora, 10835, was homeward bound in June 1918. He was discharged on 16 July 1918 and was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service in Egypt and Europe.
Hugh Francis Mora married Elsie May Donald in 1925. He died on 31 March 1968 at Christchurch, aged 69 years, and was buried at Waimairi Cemetery, Christchurch. He was survivied by his wife, Elsie, who died in 1993 and was buried with him, and by his son, Vincent.
