Biographical Notes
Donald McQueen McIntosh was born on 9 January 1894 at Glasgow, Scotland, the younger son of Andrew and Christina (née McQueen) McIntosh. He was named for his maternal grandfather. In 1901 Donald was at home with his parents, elder sister Mary and elder brother David. Also there was his maternal grandmother, Mary McQueen (née McDonald), who had been with Andrew, Christina and little Mary in 1891. Donald and his siblings were scholars, their father a marine engineer.
In early August 1915 a “hearty function” was held in the Waihaorunga Schoolroom to give a send-off to four recruits for Trentham. One of those troopers was D. McIntosh. After a musical programme, each recruit was presented with a knitted outfit and three of them (including Donald) with a wristlet watch. Donald responded on behalf of the recipients. Supper and a short dance brought the evening to a close. Donald McIntosh left Waimate by the first express on Wednesday, 25 August 1915, for the Eight Reinforcements. He enlisted on 26 August 1915, naming his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs C. McIntosh, 50 Garroch Mill Road, Glasgow. He also named (Mrs) James Nelson, 6 Farley Street, Roslyn, Dunedin. On 31 March 1918 in France, Donald McIntosh stated that he had already made a Will which was deposited with his uncle, S. Nelson, 6 Farley Street, Dunedin, New Zealand. James Snclair Nelson had probably married Elizabeth McQueen, a sister of Christina. Donald was engaged in farm work, was single and Presbyterian, and gave for his address C/o J. Powell, Waihao Downs.
Trooper D. M. McIntosh embarked with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles of the 8th Reinforcements, departing from Wellington on 13 November 1915. He embarked at Liverpool on 3 February 1919 for the return to New Zealand by the “Athenic”. On the homeward trip he was admitted to the ship’s hospital with scabies. He was discharged on 21 May 1919, having served in Egypt and Western Europe, and was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. From April 1916 the name of D. M. McIntosh appeared regularly on the Waimate Daily Advertiser Roll of Honour under the sub-title of Answered the Call.
Donald McQueen McIntosh married Ethel Alice Edmonds in 1928. Ethel died on 10 July 1933 at Christchurch and was buried at Bromley Cemetery. In 1940 Donald married Catherine Elsie Taylor née Harris, a widow. Donald McQueen McIntosh died on 12 March 1985 at Christchurch, aged 91 years. He was buried at Bromley with Ethel. There was no issue of either marriage. The estate of Donald McQueen McIntosh was administered by the Public Trust. He left a total of $18,171.00 in two savings bank accounts. In his Will dated 23 August 1962, he made provision for his wife Catherine McIntosh, and, if she was to predecease him, her inheritance was to be shared between her two nieces, Esma Green and Dorothy White. Catherine had died in 1980 and was buried at Ruru Cemetery, Christchurch.
