Biographical Notes
Zante Osborne Sherrat was born on 23 May 1897 at Geraldine, the elder son of William Amos and Ellen Maria (née Stonehouse) Sherratt. He was educated at the Geraldine District High School, transferring in 1912 to the Temuka District High School, after his success in the Standard VI Competency examination. Young Zante was awarded a prize at The Geraldine Primitive Methodist Church Sunday School in March 1904. He and his sister Myrtle both were awarded prizes in 1910. In 1905 he received a school prize and gain in 1906.
On enlistment, Zante Sherratt was of Church of England affiliation, and a machinist living at home. He named his father as next-of-kin – William Amos Sherratt, Talbot Street, Geraldine, South Canterbury. Lance Corporal Z. O. Sherratt embarked with the Specialists Company of the 38th Reinforcements, leaving for Liverpool, England, by the “Remuera” on 5 June 1918. One of 968 men in Returning Draft No. 273, Z. O. Sherratt, of Geraldine, returned to New Zealand by the “Somerset” which was due at Lyttelton on or about 12 August 1919.
He married Ivy Margaret Scott in May 1923 at the Geraldine Parish Church, Zante’s sister being a bridesmaid and his brother Roy the best man. Their “tiny daughter”, Joy was to present a horseshoe at a wedding the Geraldine Methodist Church in March 1925. Sgt Z. Sherratt was one of those present at the first social function held by the newly-formed Geraldine Ex-Servicemen’s Association in September 1927. The association was primarily formed to keep alive Anzac Day. They would probably meet only once a year. Toasts were honoured, a roll call taken, and entertainment provided.
Zante Osborne Sherratt died on 21 May 1975 at Geraldine, two days before his 78th birthday. He was buried in the Geraldine Cemetery. Ivy died in November 1975, three weeks after her 78th birthday, and was buried at Woodbury Cemetery. Ivy’s brother, Aubrey William Scott, served in World War One, and her cousin, William Scott.
