Biographical Notes
William Manifold Matson was born on 8 January 1880 at Christchurch, the older son of Conway George and Margaret Bainbridge (née Thomas) Matson. He was educated at Christ’s College, Christchurh. William married Bessie Fear on 26 November 1908 at Papanui. A son, Henry Manifold Matson, was born on 4 September 1910 at Ashburton. A daughter (Margaret Mary Georgina) was born some years later. He was an auctioneer for Guinness & LeCren, Timaru, when he enlisted on 10 June 1918. He named his wife as next-of-kin - Mrs B. Matson, 41 Blighs Road, Papanui, Christchurch; while William gave his residential address – 100 Avenue Road, Timaru. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. W. M. Matson did not serve overseas. He died on 25 October 1922 at his residence, 100 Avenue Road, Timaru, aged 42 years. He was buried at St Paul’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Papanui, Christchurch. Bessie died in 1961 and was buried in Ruru Lawn Cemetery, Christchurch, Henry with her in 1973. Their daughter Margaret died in 1999. Nine-year-old Henry had been admitted to Waimataitai School from Blyths Road School, Christchurch, in 1920. At the end of 1922 he went back to Christchurch. William’s younger brother, Lancelot Conway Matson, also served in the war.
