Biographical Notes

Hodson Alfred Leopold, known as Alfred or Alf, was born on 18 May 1898 at Christchurch, the second son of Albert Richard and Sarah Ann Maria (née Pegley) Leopold. He was educated at Timaru Main School.

Alfred was a railway employee when he enlisted on 27 July 1918. Single and residing at home, he named his mother as next-of-kin - Mrs S. A. Leopold, 29 Heaton Street, Timaru. He was a member of the South Canterbury quota of the Forty-sixth Reinforcements which left Timaru by the north express on 9 September 1918 after parading at the drill hall. H. A. Leopold served in New Zealand only, from 10 September 1918 until 29 November 1918.

Hodson Alfred Leopold married Frances Roberta Wells on 26 June 1919 at St Mary’s, Timaru. Their little son, Robert Alfred Leopold (Bobby), died at 10 months on 26 July 1920 and was buried at Timaru. Hodson died on 24 February 1962 at Christchurch, aged 63 years; Frances died in 1977.
