Biographical Notes
Ronald Alexander Cuthbert was born on 13 June 1892 at Timaru, the eldest son of Robert and Edith Alice (née Jones) Cuthbert. He was educated at Timaru Main School and Timaru Boys’ High School. In December 1906, R. A. Cuthbert (Timaru B.H.S.) passed the examination for a Civil Service Senior free place. Ronald’s father died at Timaru on Christmas Day 1914. In 1914 R. A. Cuthbert was a law clerk, but when he enlisted, he was a schoolteacher in the employ of the South Canterbury High School Board. Single and Presbyterian, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Mrs Robert Cuthbert, 34 Latter Street, Timaru. He had served with the Cadets. Sergeant R. a. Cuthbert embarked with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, leaving for Plymouth, Engand on 26 April 1917 per the “Pakeha”. Ronald married Nancy Williams in 1922. They lived in Christchurch where he practised as a solicitor. Ronald Alexander Cuthbert died on 6 May 1967 at Christchurch, aged 74 years. Nancy lived on till 1993. The name R. A. Cuthbert is recorded on the 1914-1918 Students’ Roll of Honour at the Ross Chapel, Knox College, Dunedin. His brother, Robert Norman Cuthbert, known as Norman, also served in World War One. Another brother, John Raymond Cuthbert, was a medical student residing at Knox College, Dunedin, when his name was drawn in the Tenth Ballot in September 1917. Their youngest broter, Douglas Howie Cuthert, died in January 1921 as a result of injuries received in a farm accident at his brother’s farm at Clandeboye.
