Biographical Notes
Kenneth Ewart Gladstone Logan, known as Ken, was born on 6 May 1898 at Geraldine, the younger son of Edwin Henry and Elizabeth Edith (née Maslin) Logan. His parents had married at Geraldine in 1888. He was educated at the Geraldine District High School, leaving at the age of 14½. In 1911 he gained Competency in the Standard VI examinations. He recited “A Little Bird” at the Geraldine Band of Hope entertainment in September 1903. At the Geraldine Primitive Methodist Church Sunday School anniversary services in March 1904, Kenneth received second prize in the 7th Class. He continued his Band of Hope affiliation into his teens. Ken Logan enlisted on 31 May 1918, having just turned 20. A telegraphist, he was already serving with the P & T Engineers Territorials. In July at the Geraldine Drill Hall, Ken Logan and three comrades were sent away with many expressions of good will and the usual parcels of soldiers’ comforts. K. E. G. Logan left for camp in the Christchurch draft of the 44th Reinforcements after parading at the King Edward Barracks on 15 July. Kenneth Logan married Valerie Boyne Murphy of Dunedin in 1934. He died on 23 July 1971 at Wakari Hospital, Dunedin, aged 73 years, and was cremated at Anderson’s Bay Crematorium. Valerie died in 1978 and was cremated also. Their His older brother, Edwin Bruce Dunlop Logan, also enlisted for service in World War One.
