Biographical Notes
William David Kean, known as David or Bill, was born on 14 November 1893 at Oamaru, the son of Andrew and Sarah Ellen (née Fraser) Kean. He was educated at Oamaru South School, where he had time off for sickness. He left school to go out to work.
In April 1917, William David Kean, ploughman, Raincliff, was one of 358 names drawn in the ballot for the South Canterbury Military District to fill vacancies in the 30th Reinforcements. He was single when he enlisted on 8 June 1917 at Dunedin. William married Helen Jane Brough on 28 December 1917 at Oamaru. His nominated next-of-kin was his wife – Mrs Elen Jane Kean, Balmoral Hotel, Timaru. Medical issues prevented him from further service.
William David Kean died on 30 March 1980 at Sunnyside Hospital, Christchurch, aged 86 years. He was buried at Lyttelton Cemetery with Helen who had died in 1973. His brother James Robert Kean served in World War One.
