Biographical Notes
William James Mullaly was born on 27 October 1893 at Timaru, a twin of Thomas Henry. They were the sons of James and Sarah Jane (née O’Neill) Mullaly. W. J. Mullaly enlisted firstly on 1 June 1916 and was medically assessed at Geraldine. He was a plumber, single and residing at Geraldine. He named his father as next-of-kin – James Mullaly, Wilson Street, Timaru. On 22 June 1916 he was admitted to hospital at Trentham with gonnorrhea. He was rejected for military service on account of neck trouble. . J. Mullaly enlisted again, on 5 May 1917 at Timaru, and was medically examined on that day. This time he was classed C2, with goitre.
W. Mullaly, a certified plumber, started business at Geraldine in June 1919. William was very active in the Geraldine community - acting as MC, competing in bowls, becoming a member of the Geraldine Racing Club, judging waltzing at the Orari Gorge School Committee’s social in July 1921. At the Geraldine Queen Carnival crowning ceremony in April 1926, honours were bestowed on a number of people, including W. Mullaly who was dubbed Sir William Mullaly, Lord High Slogger of the Carnival and Knight Conductor of this Bathroom. In December of the same year he passed the writte examination of the Plumbers’ Board of New Zealand.
In 1927, William James Mullaly married Hazel Pearl Nicholas (née Vanstone), the widow of Sidney Edward Nicholas. William and Hazel moved to Greymouth soon after their marriage. In April 1938 Mr and Mrs W. J. Mullaly and children (of Greymouth) visited her sister’s family at Little River. Her sister and nephew pad a reciprocal visit the following month.
William James Mullaly died on 18 July 1944 at Greymouth, aged 50 years. He was buried at Orowaiti Cemetery, Greymouth, Hazel with him in 1996.
