Biographical Notes

Clarence William Wright was born on 6 May 1893 at Ellesmere, the eldest son of William Richard and Alice Florence (née Barnett) Wright. He was educated at various Canterbury schools – Burnham Kirwee and Weedons. Clarence was listed on the Reserve Roll at Willowbridge in 1916. He attested in 1917 when he was living at Williowbridge. He was still serving with the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment. He had previously been medically examined – on 26 May 1916 at Waimate – and rejected on account of varicocele and goitre. He was again assessed as medically unfit and was granted Leave of Absence (without pay) from 18 April 1917 at Trentham Camp. He was also permitted to wear Civilian Clothes.

Clarence married Amy Elizabeth Mann in 1928. He died on 1 July 1966 at Waimate, aged 74. He was buried in the Waimate Lawn Cemetery. His brother, Lionel Gordon Wright, served in World War One.
