Walter George Black, nicknamed Boy, was born on 18 May 1897 at Ophir, Otago, the third child and oldest son of Walter (Happy) and Charlotte Amelia (née Jaggers) Black. Shortly after Walter was born, his parents moved to Fairlie. Walter started his schooling at Fairlie, transferring to Silverstream School, near Failie at the age of eight. Two years later he moved to Addington School in Christchurch and in September 1911 returned to Fairlie School.
Walter, junior, was a shepherd at Lake Tekapo when his name was drawn in the ballot. He enlisted on 21 June 1917 at Timaru. He was serving with the 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles. He married Gladys Lilian Smith in 1920. Walter George Black died on 7 February 1952 at Fairlie and was buried in the local cemetery.
