Biographical Notes

George Taylor was born on 13 November 1897 at Napier, the first-born of Thomas and Agnes (née Tankard) Taylor. The family moved from Napier to Timaru at the turn of the century. George was educated at Timaru South and Timaru Main schools, going out to work at the age of fourteen. When George enlisted on 28 November 1917 at Timaru, he was a mechanic living at home in Nile Street, Timaru. His next-of-kin was his mother – Mrs T. Taylor, Nile Street, Timaru. Private G. Taylor embarked with the Specialist Company of the 40th Reinforcements for Plymouth, England, on 10 July 1918 by the “Tahiti”.

G. Taylor, of Timaru, was one of more than 800 men who returned to New Zealand by the “Port Hacking” in August 1919. He married Marita Valentine Roberts in 1922. George Taylor died 4 September 1973 at Timaru and was interred in the local cemetery with Marita who had died in 1954.
