Biographical Notes

Alexander Roberts Mitchell was born on 2 September 1884 at Timaru, the second son of William John Mitchell and Annie née Roberts. While William John Mitchell was from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Annie Roberts was from Liberton, Scotland. Alexander was actually born Alexander Mitchell Roberts, to Annie. He was a gardener residing at Dee Street, Timaru, when he enlisted, as Alexander Robert Mitchell. His next-of-kin was his older bother – W. J. Mitchell (born William John Roberts), Cragie Street, Timaru. Private A. R. Mitchell embarked with the 40th Reinforcements for Plymouth, England, on 10 July 1918 by the “Tahitia”.

A. R. Mitchell, of Timaru, was one of more than 800 men who returned to New Zealand by the “Port Hacking” in August 1919. Alexander Roberts Mitchell died on 3 September 1941 at Timaru and was interred at Timaru Cemetery with his parents. His mother had died in 1907 and his father in 1928. Their third son, John Henry Mitchell, died in 1911 at Timaru Hospital, of Dee Street, after a very short illness, just 25 years old. Two brothers, Thomas (Tom) Mitchell and Albert Mitchell, also saw service with the New Zealand Forces.
