Biographical Notes
Charles Stanley Hawkey, born on 30 June 1884 at Timaru, was the third son of Tom and Priscilla (née Beswetherick) Hawkey, both of whom hailed from Cornwall, England. Along with his brothers and sisters, he was educated at Timaru South and Timaru Main schools. On 24 March 1913 at Timaru, he married Lucretia Jeanette Lennie, known as Jeanette. When Charles enlisted on 28 November 1917 at Timaru, he and Jeanette were living at 30 Queen Street, Timaru, John employed as a boot salesman. Private C. S. Hawkey embarked for Plymouth, England, on 10 July 1918, with the 40th Reinforcements per the “Tahiti”.
Rifleman C. S. Hawkey returned to New Zealand by the “Somerset” which was due at Lyttelton about 12 August 1919. Charles Stanley Hawkey died on 16 January 1956 at Ashbburton and was buried in the RSA section of Ashburton Cemetery. Jeanette died in 1966. His brother Leslie Gordon Hawkey was killed in action in France on 8 October 1918 and another brother, Thomas Hawkey, also served in World War One.
