Biographical Notes

Albert Avery Coulbeck was born on 31 May 1888 at Waimate, the second son of John and Charlotte (née Glover) Coulbeck. A grocer and single, he was living at home with his widowed mother when his name was drawn in the ballot and he enlisted on 21 February 1917. He stated that his mother was partially dependent on him. His father had died in June 1904 and was buried at Waimate.

Alfred married Daisy May Mackay in 1918. He died on 16 May 1945 at Wellington and was interred in the Karori Cemetery. His brothers, William John Coulbeck and Wesley Coulbeck both served with the New Zealand Forces.
