Biographical Notes
George Robert Griffiths was the eldest of the four sons of Robert Stuart and Alice Margaret (née Philpott) Griffiths. He was born on 12 June 1891 at Timaru, and baptised (George Robert Stuart Griffiths) on 9 July 1891 at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru. He was educated at Timaru Main School. His mother died in 1917 at Timaru. The second son, Charles Robert Stuart Griffiths, died young; and the third and fourth sons, Leonard Stuart Griffiths and Arthur Stuart Griffiths, served in World War One. George married Dorothy Patience Orchard on 23 February 1916 at Christchurch. His name was drawn in the ballot and he enlisted on 10 September 1917 at Timaru. He had served with the 2nd South Canterbury Regiment, being discharged when he had served his time. George Robert Griffiths died 21 September 1972 at Timaru, aged 81. His wife died seven months before. They were cremated at Salisbury Park Crematorium, Timaru.
