Biographical Notes
William John McNicholl was born on 27 August 1893 at Timaru, the eldest son of George and Harriett (née Tavener) McNicholl, and was baptised on 26 September 1893 at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru. He was educated at Waimataitai School. A plasterer and single, he was residing in Gisborne when he enlisted and named his father as next-of-kin – George McNicholl, Thomas Street, Timaru. He married Lila Muriel Haxton in 1924. William died on 13 May 1973 at Masterton, aged 79. Lila died in 1977. They are buried together in the Archer Street Cemetery, Masterton. His brother, George McNicholl, served in the war.
