Biographical Notes
Charles Sandman was born on 27 September 1877 at Christchurch, the first-born of Charles and Cecilia (née McKay) Sandman. Charles’ early education was private until he entered Christchuch Normal School at the age of 7½. He left at 14 to go out to work.
At a meeting at Waimate in July 1915 – possibly of the Waimate Automobile Association, it was reported that sixteen members were absent with the Expeditionary Forces, C. Sandman being one of them. A shepherd for George McCulloch of Waihao Forks when he enlisted, Charles Sandman didn’t embark until 9 October 1915.
After his return from service, Charles worked as a chauffeur. He died suddenly on 3 July 1927 at his employer’s residence in Christchurch. His death was due to heart failure following haemorrhaging. Sandman had been gassed at the war, which may have affected his sudden demise.
