Biographical Notes

Albert Victor Oliver, known as Victor, was born on 16 January 1886 at Pleasant Point and baptised there, the third son of James and Ellen (Eleanor, née Josling) Oliver. The family farmed Surrey Downs from about 1871, James having come from Surrey, England. Mr Oliver died in 1926, predeceased by his wife (1914). Victor was educated at Pleasant Point School, going on to the Timaru High School.

Albert Victor Oliver was single when he enlisted on 26 February 1917 at Timaru. On 7 March 1917 at Wanganui he married Dorothy Isabelle Tennent. His wife was his next-of-kin when he embarked on 21 November 1917. Their first child was born on 10 March 1918. Lance- Corporal a. V. Oliver was discharged on 26 February 1919. He died on 12 March 1967 at Christchurch, aged 81 years. His name is inscribed on the family headstone at Pleasant Point. His younger brother, Oscar Dudley Oliver, also served in World War One.
