Victor Samuel Eathorne was born on 22 November 1898 at Waimate, the fifth son of John and Clara (née Harris) Eathorne, who had married in their native Cornwall immediately before emigrating to New Zealand in 1879 and settling at Waimate. Rifleman V. S. Eathorne embarked with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade of the 5th Reinforcements at Wellington on 26 June 1916. He returned to New Zealand in March 1918. The South Canterbury men came from Lyttelton by special train expected mid afternoon on the 19th March.
Victor married Eveleen Agnes MCDonald in 1919. He died on 8 February 1959 at Waimate, aged 60 years. He and Eveleen are buried in the Waimate Lawn Cemetery. His brother Albert Eathorne also served in World War One, and another, Edward John Eathorne, was called up in 1918.
