Biographical Notes
Henry Hugh Smith was born on 14 January 1893 at Pleasant Point, the second son of Henry Foster and Mary Dunlop (née Hunter) Smith. He was educated at Kakahu Bush School, leaving before his fourteenth birthday to work as a farm labourer. He and his older brother, Stephen, were farm contractors when they were called up, Although Henry’s address was Kakahu School, as was his father’s, his father was a farmer.
H. H. Smith, Kakahu School, returned home in Draft 210, which brought seventy invalided soldiers for Canterbury and the West Coast, due to reach New Zealand in late January 1919. Henry Hugh Smith married Alice Rita Emily Dean (Rita) in 1926. They remained in the South Canterbury area. .
