Biographical Notes

Leonard Mills was born on 2 April 1895 at Timaru, the fourth son of Ellis and Hannah (née Pavey) Mills. He was educated at Gleniti, Waimataitai and Ttimaru Main schools. He was a telegraph cadet at Eketahuna when he enlisted. Leonard married Gladys Louisa Metcalfe Currey in 1920. He died on 12 June 1984 at St Andrews Hospital. Both he and Gladys were cremated, their ashes interred at Purewa Cemetery, Auckland. Two brothers served in World War I – Edwin Harry and Charles Stanley, Stanley dying of wounds in 1917.
