Biographical Notes

Harry Augustus Mason was born on 30 November 1893 at Tuturau, Southland, the older son of Augustus and Emily (née Smith) Mason. He was educated at Tuturau School. Called up in 1916, Rifleman Mason embarked with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade on 26 April 1917.

H. A. Mason, of Waimate, returned home in Draft 211, with over a thousand men aboard, per the “Briton” which was dued at Lyttelton in late January 1919. Harry married Eleanor Beatty in January 1923. Eleanor died in November 1923 and was buried at Waimate. He then married Pearl Irene Watkins in 1925. Harry Augustus Mason died on 11 June 1959 at Ashburton and was buried there, Pearl with him in 1965. His brother Cecil also served in World War I.
