Biographical Notes
George Michael Montgomery was born on 28 June 1884 at Waimate, the second of the three sons of Arthur Montgomery and his second wife Julia, née Hogan. He was baptised Roman Catholic on 20 January 1894 at Waimate. Their mother died in July 1905 and their father in April 1906. George left as part of South Canterbury's quota for the 20th Reinforcements by the second express north on 23 August 1916. Prior to leaving the men were entertained at the Stafford Tea Rooms by the Ladies Committee of the South Canterbury Patriotic War Relief Society. The men assembled at the Drill Shed to be addressed by the Mayor and other dignitaries and then to march to the Railway Station, accompanied by the 2nd South Canterbury Band, Senior Cadets and Honorary Territorials. His brother, John Montgomery, left Timaru at the same time and saw service overseas. Their oldest brother, Thomas Arthur Montgomery, who was the next-of-kin for both George and John, was himself called up in 1917. The three brothers are buried with their parents in the Waimate Old Cemetery.
