Biographical Notes

Thomas Jesse Gimson was born on 19 September 1888 at Winchester, South Canterbury, New Zealand, the youngest son of Charles William and Martha Anne Kitney (née Binskin) Gimson, who came from Kent to New Zealand in the early 1870. Thomas was baptised at St John’s Anglican Church, Winchester, on 9 December 1888. His father was a storekeeper at Winchester. Thomas attended Christ’s College in Christchurch. He married Decima Elizabeth Bartram on 11 August 1915 at Timaru. Their first child, Errol Desmond Gimson, was born on 22 June 1916. Thomas was living at Waimate when he was listed on the 1916 South Canterbury Reserve Roll.He was drawn in the ballot and called up in 1917. His brother, Charles, served in the war, and two others were called up – William and Albert Henry.
