Biographical Notes

Charles Gimson was born on 3 April 1878 at Temuka, the second son of Charles William and Martha Anne Kitney (née Binskin) Gimson, who came from Kent to New Zealand in the early 1870. His father was at one time a storekeeper at Winchester. C. Gimson was one of four infantry non-commissioned officers who left Timaru on 23 August 1916 with the 20th Reinforcements draft to go into training for the Twenty-second Reinforcements. His brother, Thomas Jesse Gimson, also enlisted, and two others were called up – William and Albert Henry.
