Biographical Notes

Francis Charter Ward, known as Frank, was born on 28 March 1898 at Timaru, the second of the three sons of James and Millicent Sophie (née Charter) Ward. He was educated at Waimataitai School. Francis C. Ward, a motor mechanic at Geraldine, handed in his name for enlistment, in November 1917, as he had turned 20, but then he gave a birthdate of 20 October 1897. Francis married Elsie Marshall in 1928 at St Mary's, Timaru. He was still living in Timaru in 1942 when he was balloted for World War II. His older brother, Leonard Stanley Ward, served in World War I.
