Biographical Notes

John Norton Lewis was born on 29 October 1892 at Towyn, Merionethshire, Wales, the son of John Humphrey and Ellen Elizabeth Lewis. In 1901 he was at home at Towyn, with his widowed mother, a lodging house keeper, and his older brother, David Llewellyn Lewis. John Humphrey Lewis had died at Towyn on 12 November 1895, when David and John were very young. It is likely that Ellen Elizabeth Lewis, with her two sons, had come to New Zealand by 1911. In 1914 she married Francis Sumpter, and she was next-of-kin for John (not a sister). John was living at home in Timaru, a grocer with CFCA, and was among the recruits passed by the medical men in Timaru in mid July 1915. He married Lucy Gwendoline Price in 1920. He died on 20 September 1966 at Auckland, aged 73 years. After cremation at Purewa, his ashes were interred in Waikumete Cemetery. Ellen Elizabeth Sumpter died in 1942, and was buried at Timaru, Francis with her. David Llewellyn Lewis, an army officer, died in 1959.
