Biographical Notes
William George Carpenter was born on 17 November 1895 at Dunedin, the younger son of George and Amy (née Brinn) Carpenter. He was educated privately and at various schools, including Kaikorai in Dunedin, Tasman St in Nelson, Central Nelson, and Brooklyn in Wellington. Private W. G. Carpenter had passed the medical examination and left for Palmerston North on 14 July 1915. But he was underage. In 1915 he married Helen Cecilia Lyons. The following year, both William and his older brother, Thomas Brinn Carpenter, were listed on the South Canterbury Reserves Roll – William a warehouseman at Temuka and Thomas a draper in Timaru. And in 1917 William again enlisted. He died on 31 August 1959, aged 63 years, and was buried in Wharerangi Cemetery in the Napier district.
