Biographical Notes

George Bowie Ross, born on 9 October 1895 at Burkes Pass, was the oldest son of Donald and Helen (née Bowie) Ross. He was educated at Milton and Burkes Pass schools. At the time of enlisting, George was a shepherd for his father at Burkes Pass. G. B. Ross, 7/2137, of Burkes Pass, returned to New Zealand per the “Kia Ora”, embarking at Liverpool in March 1919, the draft being due at Lyttelton on 7 May 1919. George married Leila Georgina Clarkson in 1934. He died on 5 January 1972, aged 76 years, and was buried in Burkes Pass Cemetery. Leila who was some 18 years younger than George lived till 1994.
