Biographical Notes

James Groundwater, born on 21 September 1886 at Woodbury, was the son of Thomas and Catherine (née McLean) Groundwater. He was educated at Woodbury School. James was a farmer at Ma Waro, South Canterbury, when he enlisted. His nominated next-of-kin was his father, Thomas Groundwater of Woodbury and afterwards of Temuka. J. Groundwater, 14100, of Temuka, returned to New Zealand per the “Kia Ora”, embarking at Liverpool in March 1919, the draft being due at Lyttelton on 7 May 1919. He married Flora Ann McLachlan in 1921. James Groundwater died on 21 February 1978, aged 91 years. Both James and Flora were cremated at Salisbury Park Crematorium, their ashes interred at Pleasant Point Cemetery.
