Biographical Notes

John Joseph Hogan, born on 4 July 1896 at Waimate, was the fifth son and the eighth of the fourteen children born to Martin and Mary (née Cleaves) Hogan. A labourer living at home, he named his mother, Mrs M. Hogan, Waimate, as next-of-kin. John married Florence Lucy James Ellis (Lucy) in 1925. He died on 5 December 1983, aged 87 years, and was buried with Lucy in Taruheru Cemetery, Gisborne. Five Hogan brothers enlisted for in World War I - Henry Joseph, Michael, Martin Joseph and John Joseph who all served overseas, and William Francis whose service was at home.
