Biographical Notes

Stanley Hatton, known as Stan, was born on 27 November 1894 at Timaru, the son of Frederick (Fred) and Jessie (née Walker) Hatton. His birth was registered as Stanley Hatton Parkinson. It appears that his father was born Frederick Parkinson and was adopted by the Hatton family after his mother’s death. For a time he used the name Frederick Hatton Parkinson then simply Frederick Hatton . Six of the children were register Parkinson, two Hatton. He married as Frederick Parkinson and died as Frederick Parkinson Hatton. Stanley Hatton was baptised at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru, on 13 September 1898, with his brother Stanley and sister Maud Hatton who was also born Parkinson. Along with his siblings he was educated at Waimataitai School.

Stanley Hatton, a shepherd, gave his home address and named his mother as next-of kin, when he left for Trentham on 18 October 1915 with South Canterbury’s quota for the Ninth Reinforcements. Stanley married Minnie Louisa Beckley on 12 March 1919 in Edinburgh. He died on 21 December 1976 at Brighton near Dunedin. He was cremated at Andersons Bay and his ashes were interred at Omaka Cemetery, Blenheim, with his wife who had died in 1960.

Four Hatton brothers served in World War I, the others being James Robert, Frederick Henry and Gordon. Their youngest brother, Nelson Stuart Hatton lost his life in World War II – 4 September 1942 in Egypt.
