Biographical Notes

William Tom Gawler, born on 20 February 1896 at Waimate, was the second son of Robert Pinney and Agnes (née Tully) Gawler. He was educated at Oamaru North School and, after time in England when the family went there in 1906, attended Ashburton and Prebbleton schools. Rifleman W. T. Gawler died of his wounds on 17 July 1918 in France and was buried in Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt. A Roll of Honour notice in the Press of 27 July 1918 requested Waimate papers to copy. Two brothers Robert George Gawler and Charles John Gawler both served in World War I.
