Biographical Notes

Robert George Gawler was the eldest son of Robert Pinney and Agnes (née Tully) Gawler. He was educated at Oamaru North School, finishing his education in England when the family went there in 1906. Rifleman R. G. Gawler suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg about 16 September 1916 and was sent to England to the Brokenhurst Hospital. This disability resulted in a pension. Robert married Christine O’ Callaghan in 1918. His brother William Tom Gawler died of wounds in 1918 in France, and another brother Charles John Gawler also served in World War I.
