Biographical Notes

Gray Russell Wright, born on 31 May 1891 at Oamaru and named for his maternal grandfather, was the twin son of Bryce and Jessie (née Russell) Wright. He was educated at Gapes Valley, Cricklewood and Pleasant Point schools. Gray was farming with his father at “Creelands”, Cricklewood when he enlisted, leaving by the train from Fairlie on 12 August 1914 with the 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles men from Fairlie. He married Marion Jessie Boyd Roxburgh in 1927. His brother, Bryce Wright, who also served in World War I, died suddenly in 1936 at the age of 50. ,
