Biographical Notes

Edward Howard St George Wakefield was born on 23 April 1875 at Timaru, the older son of Felix Edward Wakefield (Edward) and his wife, Agnes Mildred née Hall. His father was the Member of Parliament for Geraldine from 1875 till 1881. Agnes was a niece of John Hall who succeeded Edward Wakefield as the Member of Parliament for Selwyn. Edward, junior, was educated at Wanganui Collegiate School. In 1911 Edward was residing at South Mimms, Middlesex, England. He was a clerk with the Royal Automobile Club of London. Although married, he was alone at this time, Annie, a florist, visiting in Chelsea. Edward, a civil engineer, married Annie Edith Webster-Wedderburn on 21 February 1903, St Mathias, Earls Court, London.

Private Edward Howard Wakefield enlisted on 7 February 1900 at Trowbridge, England, with the Imperial Yeomanry for service in the South African War. From 21 August 1917 he served with the Royal Air Force. He served as an air mechanic with the Royal Flying Corps. He was 42 years old, married, the manager of the Foreign Department of the Automobile Club, and residing at 1B The Beverley, New Brighton, Staten Island. On 12 September 1918, residing at Staten Island, Richmond, New York, U.S.A., E. H. Wakefield registered for service with the United States Forces, giving his wife, Annie Edith Wakefield, 213 Hamilton Avenue, New Brighton, Richmond, New York, as next-of-kin. 213 Hamilton Avenue was also Edward’s permanent address. He was then a clerk for the Autobmobile Club of America. In 1925 Edward and Gibralter-born Annie were living at Richmond, New York, Edward the manager of the Automobile Club.

Edward Howard St George Wakefield died on 6 April 1930 at Apple Tree Cottage, Thakeham, Sussex, aged 54. He was buried in St Mary’s Churchyard, Thakeham. Probate was firstly granted to his widow, Annie Edith Wakefield, and a solicitor, this being later amended to the solicitor only. Annie died on 9 July 1943 at Storrington, Sussex.

Edward’s father died in 1924 In England. His brother Gerald died in infancy and was buried at Timaru; his sisters Grace and Mildred both died in England. Edward, senior, and Agnes went their separate ways, Agnes marrying Edward Withers in 1886 in Christchurch and having four more children. She died in 1919 at Invercargill and was buried with her husband at Dunedin. .
