Biographical Notes

Matthew Henry Thomson was born at Timaru in 1885, the youngest son of Matthew and Louisa Mary (née Corkhill) Thomson. He was educated at Hamilton West and Rotorua schools. Matthew was only 2½ when his father died at Timaru in 1887. His mother, from the Isle of Man, died in 1896 at Rotorua. Matthew enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 26 August 1915 at Holsworthy, New South Wales. He was 30 years old, a coachbuilder and single. His nominated next-of-kin was his brother – John Thomson, Te Pahu, via Frankton Junction, Auckland. Matthew had served a five-year apprenticeship at Otahuhu.

M. H. Thomson commenced the return to Australia on board “Karoola” on 12 April 1916, and disembarked on 12 May. He was discharged on 10 March 1917 at Sydney, medically unfit. [Cenotaph Database]. He married Mabel W. Belfield in 1924 in New South Wales. Matthew Henry Thomson, a retired soldier, died on 8 May 1931 at Hazelbrook, New South Wales. He had returned home from service suffering from phthisis. Mabel was the administrator of his estate.
