Biographical Notes
Jeremiah James Quinlan was born on 27 October 1888 at Limerick, Ireland, the son of James and Bridget Quinlan. He may well have come to New Zealand in 1914, although he said that he had been in New Zealand for five years when he enlisted. Jeremiah married Annie Teresa Hally on 28 November 1916 at Temuka. His name was drawn in the double ballot in late August 1917, a list which contained the names of some fifteen thousand men from throughout the Dominion. Private Quinlan and three other local men left for camp on 26 November after spending their final leave in Temuka. In the late 1920s or early 1930s, Jeremiah and Annie moved to Christchurch. There, late in 1943, tragedy struck – Jeremiah was found dead in the Barbadoes Street Cemetery on 15 December 1943, having committed suicide. Both the burial record and the death registration name him as Jeremiah Joseph Quinlan.
