Biographical Notes

Benjamin Jonas, born on 27 December 1874 at Timaru, was the eldest son of Moses (Moss) and Emma (née Symondson) Jonas. Along with siblings, he was educated at Timaru Main School and privately. Benjamin enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 29 December 1915 at Liverpool, New South Wales, aged 41 years. He had served with the High School Cadets for four years, surely at Timaru. An accountant and bookkeeper, he named his mother as next-of-kin – Emma Jonas, Box 560, P.O., Dunedin, NZ. Moss Jonas had died in 1907 and Emma died in 1918 at Dunedin.

Benjamin Jonas was discharged on 8 January 1916 as medically unfit. In 1930 he was an accountant, living at Darlinghurst, Sydney. He died on 13 August 1948 at Sydney and was buried in Rockwood Cemetery.
