Biographical Notes
Emil Gottlieb Henry Fischer was born on 6 June 1887 at Timaru, the eldest son of well-known photographer Adolf Gottlieb Fischer, from Switzerland, and his Bavarian-born wife, Katherina née Blab, who had come to New Zealand in 1879-80. Harry was educated Timaru South and Timaru Main schools, transferring to West Chritstchurch School in mid 1900 when the family moved.
Harry was still in New Zealand in 1911, living with some siblings in Christchurch, where he served an apprenticeship as a plumber for five years. Harry Fischer enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 16 April 1915 at Liverpool, New South Wales. He was 27 years 10 months old, a plumber, and single, naming his mother as next-of-kin - Mrs Katherine Fischer, 291 Hereford St, Christchurch, New Zealand. After his marriage to Sarah Mabel Applelby on 1 September 1915 at St Stephen’s Anglican Parish, Newtown, Sydney, his wife became his next-of-kin. On marrying Harry stated that his father, a photographer, was deceased.
Post war, Harry continued his work as a plumber. Harry Emil Fischer died on 8 June 1971, aged 84 years, and was buried at Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney, with his wife who had died in 1938. Two brothers served in World War I – Alfred Frederich Fischer with the United Forces and Albert George Fischer with the New Zealand Forces.
