Biographical Notes
Frederick William Church was born on 8 September 1882 at Timaru to John George and Eliza (née Bennett) Church. John and Eliza hailed from Gloucestershire and were in Timaru by 1878 when their eldest daughter entered Timaru Main School. Frederick’s sister, Martha, was born in 1880 and left Timaru Main School in June 1889 for Melbourne, as did an older brother John. Frederick enlisted at Melbourne on 5 February 1916, when he was 33 years 5 months old, married and an ironmoulder. He nominated his wife as next-of-kin – Mrs Evelyn Church, 10 Hobson Street, Newport, Victoria, Australia. It was 2 January 1919 when Frederick returned to Australia from England. Frederick married Evelyn Lawson in 1902 in Victoria. He died on 21 March 1944 at Manangatang, Victoria, a farmer, aged 61 years. His youngest brother, Albert Henry Church, who was born in 1887 at Timaru, served in World War II.
