Biographical Notes

Edmund Peter Burke was born in 1877 at Timaru, the son of John and Margaret Mary (née Fitzgerald) Burke. John’s farm went to auction at the Makikihi Hotel in 1889, as he was leaving for Victoria. Edmund enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 21 January 1916 at Sale, Victoria. A shipping clerk, 38 years 8 months old, he was residing at Lakes Entrance, Victoria, and named his wife as next-of-kin – Mrs M. J. Burke, Lakes Entrance, Victoria. Edmund had married Mary Josephine Wyld in 1913 in Victoria. Edmund Peter Burke, a pensioner, died on 23 September 1964 at Morwell, Victoria.
