Biographical Notes

Arthur Edward Bilton, born on 21 March 1872 and baptised on 7 April at St Mary’s Anglican Church, Timaru, was the son of John and Elizabeth (née Inwood) Bilton. John Bilton died in 1894 and Elizabeth in 1900, both buried in Timaru Cemetery. His early education was at Miss Pavitt’s Private School at Timaru, before he went to Timaru Main School, leaving at the age of sixteen to go out to work. He was a clerk when he enlisted. He named his wife as next-of-kin – Mary Edith Bilton, Stanley Street, Randwick, New South Wales. Arthur had married Mary edith Keefe in 1903 at Perth, Western Australia. He had served in the New Zealand Artillery, C Battery for seven years, when his time expired. His brother Francis also served with the Australian Forces in World War I, and his sister Margaret served with Queen Alexandra’s Nursing Service.
