Biographical Notes
Sylvester Bartholomew Cavanagh was the son of William and Jane Elizabeth (née Anthony) Cavanagh. Some years after his father's death in 1904, his mother married Alfred Bampton. Sylvester was living at Pleasant Point, perhaps with his mother, when he was called up. On 25 June 1917, he left with men from the South Canterbury military district for camp. His brother, Thomas Norman Cavanagh was killed in action in France in 1917.
