Biographical Notes
Frederick Oswin Knowles was the fifth son of George Du Rose Knowles and Charlotte Knowles née Taylor. Along with his siblings, Frederick was educated at Waimataitai School. He married Ella Stevenson on 25 March 1916 at Wellington, when he was in camp at Tretham. Embarking at Tilbury on 12 March 1919 for the return home, he reached Lyttelton, New Zealand by the “Corinthic” in April 1919, one of 1142 soldiers aboard. His brother Arthur Gordon Knowles also served in World War I, and their youngest brother, Percy Timaru Knowles, was called up.
