Biographical Notes

James Easson Cowan was the second son of Archibald and Mary (née Easson) Cowan. James was at home with his family in 1891 at Innerleithen and in 1901 at Leith, Midlothian, where he was a message boy. His maternal uncle, George Easson, also came to New Zealand and lived in Timaru for some years. Embarking at Tilbury on 12 March 1919 for the return home, James reached Lyttelton, New Zealand by the “Corinthic” in April 1919, one of 1142 soldiers aboard. He married Laura Mary Beatrice Johnson in 1923.
